What is Markdown, and how does the preview work?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that turns plain text into structured HTML. Instead of typing tags, you write a few punctuation characters: # for headings, ** for bold, - for bullet lists and | for tables. The editor renders that source on every keystroke, so the final document is visible while you write.

A typical snippet opens with '# Release notes', which becomes an <h1>, followed by '## Fixes' as an <h2> and '- Fixed login' as a bullet. A GitHub-flavoured table uses pipes and a separator row: '| Field | Type |', then '| --- | --- |', then '| id | string |'. This tool supports that GFM table syntax, task lists written as - [x], fenced code blocks with language highlighting and inline links, then exports the result to clean HTML or back to Markdown.

How to use the Markdown preview

  1. Type or paste Markdown into the editor β€” the preview updates as you type.
  2. Switch between Code & Preview, Code Only and Preview Only with the view-mode control.
  3. Import an existing .md file, or export the rendered result as HTML and the source as Markdown.
  4. Use fullscreen for long documents and Clear to start over.

Frequently asked questions about Markdown

Which Markdown dialect is supported?

GitHub Flavoured Markdown (GFM) β€” tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks and fenced code blocks β€” on top of the CommonMark basics.

Is the exported HTML safe to publish?

The preview renders locally and the export contains standard elements, but always review it before publishing and sanitise any content that comes from untrusted authors.

Can I edit an existing README?

Yes β€” import the .md file, edit it in the editor and export it again as Markdown. The tool never uploads the content.
